The forest walks in Monaughty pass through some magnificent Douglas Fir and Scots Pine and provide spectacular views out to the Moray Firth. The Vale of Pluscarden and Pluscarden Abbey can be seen from the south-facing slopes. It is the only medieval monastry in Britain inhabited by a working order of Benedictine monks. There are four waymarked trails, three of which are on the hill on the north side of the road. For an easy walk, cross the road to join the excellent All Abilities trail leading you across the tranquil waters of the Black Burn. Look out for red squirrels, roe deer and the more elusive pine marten. Listen also for the mewing calls of the buzzards circling overhead in their search for rabbits and voles.
